Bronx-Whitestone Roadway Work Begins in June

The next phase of the $109 million project to reconstruct and widen the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge’s Queens approach begins in June with an around-the-clock closure of one roadway lane but using a movable barrier system three lanes of traffic will be maintained during peak commuting hours.


The movable barrier was successfully used during a similar just-completed project to reconstruct and widen the Bronx approach to the bridge.


The new traffic pattern will go into effect on Saturday, June 1, and will be in place for the first weekday morning rush on Mon., June 3. It will take about a year to complete the lane-by-lane demolition and reconstruction of the 1,010-foot long Queens approach. Work will begin in the far right lane heading north to the Bronx.


The barrier will allow for three lanes heading north to the Bronx in the morning between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and three lanes heading south to Queens in the afternoon from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. On weekends, three lanes will be in place to Queens and two lanes to the Bronx.


Once completed, the approach will have wider, 12-foot lanes and safety shoulders for the first time. The contractors will also rehabilitate the southbound 14th Avenue exit ramp by widening it, adding new curbing and a deceleration lane.


The 4-year project was awarded in July 2011 and is slated for completion in 2015. In the first phase, contractors reconstructed the support foundations below the bridge, adding six double-arch piers and a new abutment to support the roadway’s wider lanes and safety shoulders.


The Francis Lewis Park playground that was beneath the bridge was also moved to a different location within the park, and all new playground equipment and water features were added.


The similar Bronx approach project, which began in 2008, was completed in September 2012.
