FASTRACK wraps up on the Broadway Line

MTA's FASTRACK maintenance program was performed on the Great White Way earlier this week with hundreds of Transit workers descending into tunnels and stations on the D line icon Q line icon R line icon Broadway Line to fix and replace items from loose handrails to track components.

The program began 13 months ago along subway line segments running through midtown Manhattan and has been highly successful in significantly reducing the time for maintenance tasks and improving the level of safety for repair crews, who no longer have to share tracks with trains moving through the work area.  While critical maintenance jobs are attended to, workers also have the chance to do such jobs as high-intensity station cleaning and station painting, chores that are impossible to do with customers waiting for trains.

Beginning last Monday, an army of workers were deployed along the more than seven-mile long Broadway Avenue Line as train service was suspended for four consecutive nights at  D line icon Q line icon R line icon  stations in Manhattan.  Repair crews took full advantage of the seven-hour work window between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

 “FASTRACK is a giant leap forward in how we do preventative maintenance and repair work,” said Joseph Leader, Vice President and Chief Maintenance Officer for the Department of Subways. “We are getting more work done, in less time, at less cost and employees have a safer work environment.” 

Highlights of the work completed during Broadway Line FASTRACK:

  • Track – Generated 9,733 bags of debris, removed 31,800 pounds of scrap and debris, scraped and cleaned 10,415 linear feet of track, replaced 68 tie blocks, installed 1,205 plates, 32 running rails, 1,579 friction pads.  Generated 14,550 pounds of scrap debris.
  • Third Rail Operations - Cleared 2,534 identified defects, scraped and cleaned 9,350 feet of track under and around the third rail.
  • Signals – Serviced six signals, 14 switches, painted signal cases, signal heads and insulated joints, supported Track Department on rail jobs.
  • Infrastructure - Installed 510 linear feet of handrail and150 linear feet of no clearance signs, cleaned 2,000 linear feet of no clearance signs and cleaned 1,400 linear feet of track drain, sound and tap 290 square feet, repaired 90 square feet of benchwall, maintained seven pump rooms and sealed 22 leaks. 
  • EMD - Optimized pictures on monitors and cameras at Whitehall St, City Hall, Canal St and 23 St Stations and completed inspections and testing of all public address system equipment. 
  • Station Environment – Replaced 24 platform edge, 37 way-finding directional and seven handicap signs, 1,088 tunnel lights and 1,260 station lights, repaired 240 linear feet of rubbing board, scraped 22,550 square feet of paintable station surface area and painted 22,100 square feet of paintable station surface area.

The next FASTRACK will take place beginning Monday, February 25, as MTA New York City Transit brings this maintenance blitz to the Eighth Avenue Line in Upper Manhattan.  The A line icon Line will be shut down from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m., for four consecutive weeknights from Monday, February 25 to early Friday morning, March 1.  There will be no train service between 168 St and 207 St.

Customers should use nearby stations on the 1 line icon 7 Avenue Line and the M4 bus instead.
