MTA's FASTRACK initiative was in Brooklyn earlier this week, hitting the 2 line icon Nostrand Avenue Line with a maintenance and clean-up blitz that sent more than 800 workers in tunnels and stations repairing and replacing items from light bulbs to track rail.

The program, which began in January 2012 along subway line segments running through midtown Manhattan, has been highly successful, significantly reducing the time for maintenance tasks and improving the level of safety for repair crews, who no longer have to share tracks with moving trains.  While maintenance tasks are attended to, workers also have the opportunity to perform such jobs as high-intensity station cleaning and station painting, chores that are impossible to do with customers waiting for trains.

Beginning last Monday, an army of workers were dispatched along the three-mile long Nostrand Avenue Line as train service was suspended for four consecutive nights between Franklin Av and Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College.  Maintenance workers took full advantage of the seven-hour window between 10 p.m. and 5 p.m.

"With FASTRACK our maintenance forces are able to complete more work in less time and in a safer work environment", said Joseph Leader, Vice President and Chief Maintenance Officer for the Department of Subways. "Equally important, in the past year train delays and track fires on subway lines that have undergone FASTRACK maintenance have declined."

Highlights of the work completed during Nostrand Line FASTRACK:

  • Track – Generated 5,395 bags of debris, removed 9,920 pounds of debris, scraped and cleaned a total of 24,270 feet of track, replaced 22 tie blocks, installed 114 plates, 33 running rails, 230 friction pads.  Generated 16,350 pounds of scraped debris.
  • Third Rail Operations - cleared 786 identified defects, scraped and cleaned 2,410 feet of track under and around the third rail.
  • Signals – Serviced 35 signals, seven switches, painted signal cases, signal heads and insulated joints, supported Track Department on rail jobs.
  • Infrastructure - Installed 405 linear feet of handrail, 92 linear feet of no clearance signs and 16 column tags, cleaned 1,750 linear feet of drains, sound and tap 305 square feet, repaired 20 square feet of  benchwall, maintained three pump rooms, sealed ten leaks. 
  • EMD - Optimized pictures on four monitors from six cameras, inspected and tested all public address system equipment at Newkirk Av and Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College Stations.
  • Station Environment – Replaced 23 platform edge signs, 724 tunnel lights, repaired 194 linear feet of rubbing board, platform edge and water line at Beverly Rd Station,  painted 7,000 square feet of rubbing board, chopped and repaired 12 square feet of platform edge and pipe under platform at Newkirk Av Station.

On Monday, January 28, MTA New York City Transit brings FASTRACK to the Broadway line in Manhattan.  The N line iconQ line iconR line icon Broadway Line will be shut down from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m., for four consecutive weeknights from Monday, January 28 to early Friday morning, February 1.  There will be no train service at N line iconQ line iconR line icon stations in Manhattan and Court St, Brooklyn.  Service will be suspended between Lexington Av/59 St and Court St, Brooklyn. 

Customers should use nearby stations on the 6 Av D line iconF line iconQ line icon, 7 Av 1 line icon2 line icon, 8 Av A line iconE line icon, and the Lexington Av 4 line icon6 line icon lines instead.
