App of the Week: InTime NYC

InTime NYC, our App of the Week, provides schedule information for the Subway, Metro-North, LIRR, and NJ Transit trains and more all in one app.

App of the Week: InTime NYC

This iPhone app makes it easier to learn about the next scheduled departures at any station in the MTA network. With just a few taps on an iPhone screen, you can see a list of the upcoming scheduled departures. With one additional tap, you can select a train and see its scheduled arrival times at upcoming stations, regardless of whether or not you are connected to the Internet. The screens you'll see are the same for the subway, the LIRR or Metro-North.

To add convenience, the app lets a user to select his or her home station as a starting point, and up to 15 favorite stations altogether. After that, you can get immediate access to the departure information for that station.

The app was built by Torsten Geise and Torsten Heinrich of TnT Brain, GbR, based in Berlin. Both visited New York frequently as Siemens employees to help set up the Countdown Clocks that New York City Transit is now activating throughout the Subway's numbered lines. "On our last trips to New York, we needed to use more than just the subway, and we did not want to switch between apps or web pages to get the departure information," said Torsten Geise. "That's why we put the data for these additional transportation systems in the same app. This means there is no need to buy or download a second app just because you ride with more than one system."

The app was launched this past December and offers English, Spanish, Italian, French and German. For the visually impaired, the app offers voice support. The app is free to download and includes Subway schedules free of charge. To add schedules for other transit agencies, such as LIRR, Metro-North or NJ Tranist, there is a fee of 99ȼ.

TnT Brain also produces two companion apps using data published by the MTA.

  • TAlerts NYC, available for 99ȼ, provides service alerts for all MTA services, Subways, buses, Metro North, LIRR and MTA Bridges and Tunnels.
  • InTime B63, a free app, shows real-time departure information for the B63 bus route.
