App of the Week: iTrans

Even for the most veteran subway rider, knowing the easiest or fastest route to take at a particular time of day can be a guessing game. For instance, to go from 81st and Columbus to Penn Station at 3:31 p.m., is it better to catch the C or the 1? How long will it take? The iTrans app for iPhone has the answers. And it's our App of the Week.

iTrans NYC Subway is an app for iPhone that aims to provide easy-to-use, comprehensive transit advice for subway riders. Its features include:

  • Step-by-step travel directions, including walking directions, that use a proprietary algorithm that takes into account specific estimated transfer times at each transfer station.
  • Licensed MTA maps, including the subway map and the detailed neighborhood maps posted in subway stations.
  • Train schedules that incorporate weekends and holidays as appropriate.
  • Detailed service advisories, exactly as printed by MTA New York City Transit.
  • All features except service advisories are available even when the user is underground and offline.

iTrans was created by Adam Ernst, who is now a veteran rider of the NYC Subway but needed some help at first.

"When I lived in the city for the first time in the summer of 2007, it took a long time to learn the subway," he said. "Even when I had the system down, I always was wondering--is it faster to take the 2/3 or the 4/5? Questions like these, and Apple's announcement of the iPhone App Store, led me to develop iTrans."

iTrans is also available for the PATH train, NJ Transit, and transit systems in Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. The version for the New York City Subway is available on iTunes for $3.99. To learn more, visit
