Giving Thanks To Our Employees
During a moving ceremony held at NYC Transit headquarters recently, top agency officials, headed by MTA Chairman and CEO Jay H. Walder and MTA New York City Transit President Thomas Prendergast, honored 47 transit workers who put their own safety at risk to come to the aid of customers, co workers and neighbors. These heroes were honored for going above and beyond the call of duty.
Each employee shared one common trait -- a willingness to put their own safety on the line to come to the aid of others. "The men and women receiving these honors are the symbols of the spirit of this organization," said Chairman Walder, who noted that Transit employees time and time again have demonstrated an ability and willingness to rise to meet any challenge."
"These awards are given in honor of employees who, in order to come to the aid of another, put themselves at personal risk or demonstrated exceptionally good judgment." said President Prendergast. "They have demonstrated a clear willingness to selflessly come to the aid of co-workers and fellow New Yorkers."

Off-duty Transit Property Protection Supervisor Ferhat Sarayli boarded an A train at the Jay Street-MetroTech station, when he saw two men arguing. One was brandishing a sharpened screwdriver, the other wielded a boom box. Supervisor Sarayli walked around the first man and pulled the emergency cord. His actions stopped the train from leaving the station, before the fight could escalate. He moved all the customers out of harm's way and contained both suspects at the other end of the car. When the police arrived, they arrested both suspects and Supervisor Sarayli recovered the weapon.
Bus Operator Andrew Camputaro thought he saw a routine collision between two SUVs on Staten Island while he was on his route. However after seeing sparks, he secured his bus and jumped into action. He helped the driver of the SUV climb out of his window, because the car door would not open. He then checked the back seat for children. While an off-duty nurse was stabilizing the man, Andrew returned to his bus to remove the customers and place the bus between the car and customers. He then stopped the dazed accident victim from returning to his SUV to retrieve his cell phone. Moments later, the SUV was engulfed in smoke and flames.
In President Prendergast's words, Andrew "is an exemplary employee who went above and beyond the call to duty. He is a wonderful example of a caring human being who put a stranger above himself."
In a heroic incident that saved both lives and property, Transit Property Protection Supervisor Jamal Stevenson and Transit Property Protection Agent Derrick Boyd ran toward a bus emitting heavy smoke as it was entering the Gun Hill Depot in the Bronx. They tried to get the bus operator's attention to stop him from bringing the bus into the facility. However, he was unresponsive and remained on the burning bus as it coasted into the depot. They quickly surmised that the bus operator was in shock. They approached the bus, pried the doors open and removed the bus operator. They also managed to maneuver the bus to a complete stop while enduring a series of deafening explosions, and choking smoke.
Principal Architect Michael Lodespoto calls System Safety Specialist Jim Dolan "his angel," because Jim was among a group of men who rushed to his assistance when Michael fainted and fell to the tracks at the Atlantic Avenue Station during his morning commute. As he fell, he struck his head on the running rail. When he regained consciousness, he was being lifted from the tracks by four men, including Jim, who recovered Michael's employee pass so that his identity could be quickly verified by emergency personnel and family.
Honorees were nominated by their respective departments, and final selections in two categories were made by an Employee Recognition Program Committee. These categories are the Act of Heroism Medal and the Commendation Medal.
Forty-seven employees were honored at the ceremony, 16 of whom received medals of heroism.
