Gov. Cuomo & MTA Launch New Tourism Campaign

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo visited NYC Transit headquarters for a press event launching “Come See the Comeback,” a freshly-developed tourism campaign.  It urges New Yorkers to visit destinations within the MTA service region, ravaged last year by Superstorm Sandy but now well on their way back and ready for visitors.  The Governor then led the press into the Whitehall Street station where they inspected a Grand Central/Times Square Shuttle train wrapped with the colorful “I Love NY” tourism ad campaign.

“Nearly one year after Superstorm Sandy, our ‘Come See the Comeback’ campaign captures the spirit of New Yorkers who in the face of any challenge will work together to come back better than before,” Governor Cuomo said. “Superstorm Sandy caused terrible destruction in communities in Long Island, New York City and the Hudson Valley, closing down local businesses and damaging popular parks and beaches.  But in the last 12 months, many of these communities have rebuilt better than before and their doors are once again open for business. We want New Yorkers and visitors to come see the progress that these communities have made and breathe new life into the local tourism industry.  From taking a spin on the Wonder Wheel in Coney Island and touring wineries on Long Island to hiking in the Hudson Valley, there is something to do for everyone – and the MTA can get you there. So pick up a MetroCard, get on a train, and come see our comeback.”

The press event drew wide coverage and reporters were among the first to view four newly-produced television ads which are now airing across the state.  They focus on how the state has recovered from Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee and encourage visits to ‘NY Rising’ communities in New York City, Long Island and Upstate New York.

 “Superstorm Sandy brought our state and our transit network to their knees a year ago, but we not only survived, we have thrived and come back stronger than ever,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast. “Now, thanks to the leadership of Governor Cuomo and the 'Come See the Comeback' campaign, we're glad to show off all we've done and all the places the MTA can take you that have bounced back from Sandy.  Our customers will be seeing the 'I Love NY' message throughout our network, and as we did right after Sandy, the MTA is once again demonstrating its power to drive our region's economy -- by urging our customers to get on board, travel the state, and see for themselves how New York has come back from Sandy.”

Along with the TV ads, six new commemorative MetroCards designed with the “I Love NY” logo were unveiled by Governor Cuomo.  The back of each MetroCard features a message urging commuters to experience New York’s comeback and visit a recovering community such as Staten Island, Coney Island, Howard Beach, the Rockaways, Long Beach and Long Island by riding the MTA.  Beginning Tuesday, October 29, there will be 300,000 of these “I Love NY” MetroCards for sale.
